Guildhall alumni winners and nominees at Olivier Awards 2022

Congratulations to the Guildhall School alumni among the winners and nominations at this year’s Olivier Awards.

Congratulations to the alumni among the winners at this year's Olivier Awards, which took place at the Royal Albert Hall on 10 April 2022.

Tim Lutkin (Technical Theatre 2008) won Best Lighting Design for Life of Pi at Wyndham’s Theatre, alongside Andrzej Goulding. Tim was also nominated for Best Lighting Design for his work on Back to the Future: The Musical at the Adelphi Theatre.

Finn Caldwell (Acting 1999) won Best theatre choreographer and Best set design (puppets) for Life of Pi. Elliot Smith (Technical Theatre 2018) was the Associate Lighting Designer for the production.

Guildhall School Professor of Baroque Bassoon Peter Whelan won the Outstanding Achievement in Opera category, alongside the Irish Baroque Orchestra for Bajazet at the Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House.

Old Bridge at the Bush Theatre won Outstanding achievement in affiliate theatre, of which Lois Sime (Technical Theatre 2018) was the Stage Manager.

Yshani Perinpanayagam (Piano 2009) was the Consultant Musical Director for Wolf Witch Giant Fairy at the Royal Opera House – Linbury Theatre, which won Best family show.  Alice Barber (Stage Management 2013) and Rob Coupe (Stage Management and Technical Theatre 2011) were Stage Managers on the production. 

Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical won Best original score or new orchestrations, of which Shannon Martin (Stage Management 2014) was the Stage Manager. 

Music alumnus Nick Finlow was the Musical Supervisor and Arranger for Back To The Future: The Musical, which won Best New Musical. Jonathon Lyle (Stage Management and Technical Theatre 2008) was Stage Manager for the production. 

Cabaret at The Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse theatre won Best musical revival, of which Stefani Zivanic (Stage Management 2014) was the Stage Manager. 

A number of Guildhall alumni were among the final nominees.

Neil Austin (Technical Theatre 1992) was nominated for Best Lighting Design, for his work on Frozen at Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Charles Edwards (Acting 1992) was nominated for Best Actor for Best of Enemies at the Young Vic Theatre.

A Number, which stars Acting alumni Paapa Essiedu (Acting 2012) and Lennie James (Acting 1988), has been nominated in the Best Revival category. Tim Lutkin (Technical Theatre 2008) is the Lighting Designer for the production, which also featured Elliot Smith (Technical Theatre 2018) as part of the lighting team. Elliot Smith was also the Associate Lighting Designer for Life of Pi.

The Normal Heart at the Olivier, National Theatre and The Tragedy of Macbeth at the Almeida Theatre have also been nominated in the Best Revival category. The Normal Heart features alumnus Robert Bowman (Acting 1986), and The Tragedy of Macbeth features alumnus Gareth Kennerly (Acting 2005), with Tim Lutkin (Technical Theatre 2008) on Lighting. Spring Awakening, also at the Almeida, was nominated for Best Musical Revival and features alumnus Joe Pitts (Acting 2020).

Nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre are The Invisible Hand at Kiln Theatre, which features alumnus Tony Jayawardena (Acting 2003). Old Bridge at the Bush Theatre is also nominated, featuring Lois Sime (Technical Theatre 2018) as the Stage Manager, as is A Place For We at the Park Theatre, where Jerome Reid (Technical Theatre 2018) was the Production Manager and Andras Jacobs (Technical Theatre 2020) was Costume Assistant
