About Sewing for Beginners
This new two-day course will take your sewing skills to the next level. You will have the opportunity to make more complicated garments such as a pair of trousers or a skirt with a fly front, pockets and a zip. This will be a gender-neutral garment that can be made to fit any body type. Whether you are looking to get into costume design, create your own fashion garments, or are just looking to make more sustainable choices by creating or repairing existing clothes within your wardrobe, this course is for you. You will also learn about basic repairs such as fixing holes in garments and replacing zips and fastenings.
Who is the course for?
Anyone aged 16 and over who has completed the Sewing for Beginners course or who has experience sewing and has used a sewing machine. This short intermediate course in sewing will help you refresh your basic skills as well as expand on skills you already have.
To participate in the course, it is essential that you feel confident using a sewing machine, have used a machine to make basic items and understand basic sewing terms and how to do basic sewing tasks. For example, sewing straight lines, ending sewing using reverse button, sewing on a button, taking up a hem on an item of clothing, joining fabric together. It would be preferable that you have used paper patterns and constructed garments, and have put in a zip, however this is not essential and you will learn these skills on the course.
What can I expect?
You can expect to learn about:
- Repairs – buttons fastenings, darning and fixing a hole etc.
- Using a paper pattern
- Cutting out fabric using a pattern
- Constructing a garment
- Putting in a zip
- Adding in seam pockets to a garment
- Putting on a waist band
By the end of the course, you will know how to use a sewing pattern, measure yourself to fit clothing and put in a zip.

You will need to bring:
- Your own sewing machine (please note that this is optional, we encourage you to bring your own sewing machine if you can so that you are already familiar with it, but please let us know if you can't and we will have one available for you during the course)

About the Course Tutor
This course is taught by Nikki Weston.
Nikki started sewing at the age of five and has been making throughout her life. Before going to university to study costume construction in 2019 she worked for the Home Office but was always teaching sewing and making for herself.
In the last four years she has worked as a dresser, wardrobe manager, costume supervisor and maker for TV, theatre and opera. Achieving a first class honours degree in 2022 has led her to working on productions at Guildhall School and teaching Costume students. In 2023, she worked for Evolution Productions on ten pantomimes, and most recently this year worked as costume supervisor for The Merry Opera's production of Handel's Messiah.
