About Shakespeare Masterclass

Join experienced classical actor, director and tutor Mariah Gale for this fast-paced and in-depth two-day masterclass. This masterclass will provide you with a step-by-step approach to verse which will enable you to unlock an audition piece, a role or a rehearsal room using clues within the verse.  

Who is the course for?

Industry professionals and those in training, including acting and directing students.

What can I expect?

This masterclass consists of practical work and text analysis. There may also be some preparatory work which will be emailed to you before the course starts.

You can expect to explore:

  • Clarity of meaning
  • Acquiring a sense of ease and legato
  • Arcs of thought
  • Unlocking iambic; from basic building blocks to irregularities 
  • Magic words
  • Use of sound in verse

You will leave the course with a comprehensive checklist of ways to approach verse. 

Do I need anything for the course?

Something to write on e.g. a notepad and pen/pencil and clothes you can move comfortably in.

About the Course Tutor

This course is taught by Mariah Gale.

Mariah is an actor, an Associate Artist at the Royal Shakespeare Company and a private acting coach.

She trained at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she earned a first class BA in Acting and was awarded the Laurence Olivier bursary.

Her work at Guildhall has since included directing the second year Shakespeare project for two consecutive years, designing and teaching the Introduction to Shakespeare and Intermediate Level Shakespeare short courses, and sitting on the audition panel.

She has an extensive acting CV performing both contemporary and classical leading roles for major institutions on stage and screen.

Her roles at the RSC have included Queen Margaret, Juliet, Ophelia, Miranda, Portia, Celia and The Princess of France. Her roles at Shakespeare’s Globe include Bottom, Hero and Isabella and she also played Viola for Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. She has performed Shakespeare for Queen Elizabeth II and His Majesty King Charles III and performed for the RSCs televised Shakespeare Live! Event.

Throughout her career Mariah has been awarded The Ian Charleston Award (First Prize and Special Commendation), The Time Out Live Award, The Critics Choice Award, a Best Actress Evening Standard award nomination, and two Best Supporting Actor nominations at the OFFIE Awards.

She is passionate about making Shakespeare and acting available to all, and believes that every one of us can find a voice within its power, beauty and fierce relevance.

Her TV credits include I May Destroy You, Broadchurch, Dr Who, Death Comes To Pemberley, New Tricks, Grantchester, Father Brown, Lucky Man, The Hollow Crown, Skins, The Diary Of Anne Frank and Oliver Twist. Film includes Hamlet, Rare beasts, Abraham’s Point and Hercules 3D. Extensive radio work includes Brian Gulliver’s Travels, seasons I and II.
