In Conversation with Dan Hibbert, Junior Guildhall Graduate from Liverpool

We caught up with Dan about his Junior Guildhall experience, including his first audition for the Music Course. He shares audition tips and advice for managing nerves. Dan will start the Music BMus programme in September.
Hi Dan! Congratulations on getting onto the Music BMus programme at Guildhall! How are you feeling?
Dan: Hello! Thank you very much! I’m so happy to know that I’ll be continuing my studies here. It’s very exciting to think of starting the next part of my life this September. Playing music every day sounds like a dream! It’s also a great relief now that these auditions are out of the way, and I can focus on enjoying the rest of my time as a 6th form student!
You attended the Junior Guildhall Music Course since 2019. How has that been for you?
Dan: It’s been a fantastic experience that has widely shaped me as the musician I am now! The opportunities have been endless and it’s great fun to see everyone each week – the atmosphere here is very distinctive and friendly. I really feel like I have been supported throughout my musical journey so far.
You’re from Liverpool, which shows a lot of commitment! What was it like travelling down to London every Saturday?
Dan: Tiring…very tiring…haha! The early start was the worst thing. Getting up at four in the morning is never very nice. The journey is usually just over two hours, which isn’t too bad. Admittedly, it’s quite nice to just sit in your thoughts for a little while each week, and listening to music during these journeys is very relaxing.
Can you give us some insight into what your first audition for the Junior Guildhall Music Couse was like?
Dan: It all happened very quickly if I can recall. I had a rehearsal with the pianist, met the Head of Brass and Head of Junior Guildhall, then played the two pieces! It was very relaxed, and I had a chat with the panel afterwards. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and it was a very positive experience.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying to Junior Guildhall? We’d love to hear about any audition tips you have.
Dan: The panel always want you to do well! All you need to do is try your best and go for it! At least you took the risk, which is something a panel will see as a huge strength. Just be yourself and don’t be afraid to take risks! They are very good at identifying your potential so don’t worry if small slips happen. Just be very well-prepared and make sure you have everything you need like accompaniments etc. the night before.
How do you manage nerves?
Dan: I often get really nervous before performances and auditions, and most times, my lips go really dry as a result of this, and brass players will be all too familiar with the consequences of this! If possible, I keep hydrated with coconut water - it tastes horrendous but works like magic! Another great thing to do is occupy yourself before a performance or audition. This could be filling in puzzles or chatting to mates - anything to get the stress off your mind!
