Biography

Andrew Watts was born in Middlesex and studied at the Royal Academy of Music.

Andrew Watts’ operatic engagements include appearances with the Royal Opera Covent Garden, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival and Touring Operas, Welsh National Opera, the Aldeburgh and Almeida Festivals and BBC Proms. Foreign engagements include Staatsoper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Nationaltheater Mannheim, RIAS Kammerchor Berlin, Theater an der Wien, La Scala, Milan, Teatro La Fenice, Paris Opera, Opéra National du Rhin, Opera de Lyon, Teatro Real Madrid, Teatro Sao Carlos Lisbon, Grand Theatre de Genève, De Vlaamse Opera, Graz Opera, Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Bielefeld and Australia, Canada and Mexico and the Salzburg, Vienna, Dresden,Bregenz, Lucerne, Batignano and Montepulciano Festivals.

Andrew Watts’ concert engagements include appearances with BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Los Angeles and Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestras, Niew Ensemble, Klangforum, at the BBC Proms and Salzburg, Lucerne, Lausanne, Cernier, Brightonand Edinburgh Festivals, Vienna, New York, Budapest, Seville, Paris, Cologne, Brussels, France, Australia and Italy.

Engagements in 2017 include Siegfried Wagner in the world premiere of Avner Dorman’s Wahnfried for Badisches StaatstheaterKarlsruhe, Vyasemskaya / Pleasant Voice / Proletarian in A Dog's Heart for Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam, Cherubino in Elena Langer’s Divorced for Geneva Opera and his debuts at Aix-en-Provence Festival as Baba the Turk in The Rakes Progress and Berlin Staatsoper and concerts for Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and Aldeburgh Festival. Further performances include his debut at Vienna Staatsoper and returns to Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opera de Lyon and Teatro Real, Madrid.

As well as maintaining an international singing career, Andrew Watts has established a global reputation as a singing teacher and vocal consultant with a large studio of international students many of whom sing at the highest levels on the operatic and concert platforms.

As well as at the Guildhall, Andrew is voice teacher to the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as well as voice teacher and vocal consultant to the Opera Studio at the Hamburg State Opera. He gives regular masterclasses at the Dartington International Summer School and the Associated Studio London and at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. International Masterclasses have taken him as far as the Sydney Conservatorium, the Banff Centre for Performing Arts, Canada and Casa Del Musica in Portugal. His students have been major prize winners including the winning Ferrier and Wigmore Hall Song Competitions and the Opera Award Bursury.

Andrew is also the vocal consultant to Music International, an international artist management company.
