Susan Waters

Biography

In addition to her highly-regarded holistic work as professor of voice at Guildhall School, where she attracts an international studio, Susan Waters has a high global profile in her work with advanced and professional singers in Portugal, Zurich, Paris, Manila, as well as National Opera Studio and Jette Parker Young Artists programmes , London.

She is an experienced mentor in Masterclass( Oporto, to celebrate the centenary of the Conservatorio do Musica; Zurich, at the Hochschüle für Kunst; University of the Philippines and University of St Tomas Manila) . She has worked with artists at the San Carlos opera, Lisboa, and her artists now enjoy success in all branches of the classical singing world- Monteverdi Choir, Polyphony, Swingle singers, and as freelance soloists in the international opera and concert world.

Susan is an honours graduate in piano from the Royal Academy of Music, where she is now a professor of voice: she won the prestigious BP scholarship to study opera at Guildhall School. This immediately led to contracts with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Aldeburgh Festival , where she sang the premiere of Britten’s War Requiem, and English Bach Festival.

After pursuing a successful freelance career as a soprano, she decided to devote herself exclusively to the teaching of singing. First appointments were at Oxford and Cambridge universities , and she joined the vocal faculty at Guildhall school in 2001.

During the pandemic, Susan founded the Virtual Opera Studio, an online platform for advanced collaborative performance. Its work is ongoing.

She has been generously supported by Guildhall’s Professional development Programme to undertake research in Brisbane into Accent Method breathing, tongue root tension, and jaw alignment issues for singers.
