Biography
Jules Jackson is originally from Bath, moving to London in 1998 to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, from where he graduated in 2002. Whilst predominantly a jazz bass player (equally versed in both upright and electric), drums and keyboards are also instruments on which he regularly performs, records and teaches. As a bass player, he has worked extensively in the past with Jamie Cullum (having previously been a member of his trio on drums, recording Jamie’s rare and unreleased album Heard It All Before in 2000).
In recent years he has worked regularly with Jacqui Dankworth, Sir John Dankworth & Dame Cleo Laine, Salena Jones and Laurie Holloway, as well as performances with musicians such as Liane Carroll, Stan Sulzmann, Mark Nightingale, Martin Shaw, Mark Lockheart, John Parricelli, Ian Thomas, Ralph Salmins, and on two occasions in 2011 with the American drumming legend Peter Erskine.
Jules is an active composer and arranger, and an experienced sound engineer, a product of which is his 2011 debut album Groove Therapy. Additionally he has appeared on numerous recordings, including two albums with the acclaimed trombonist Mike Hext and two albums with guitarist Simon Golding for his Rough Ramblers fusion trio project.
On the other side of the mixing desk, he has engineered and/or mixed albums by a selection of British jazz artists, including Gareth Lockrane, Brandon Allen, Chris Allard, Dave Manington, Brigitte Beraha, The Big Shake Up, and a live recording in 2016 of Stan Sulzmann’s Neon Orchestra. As well as the Guildhall School, current teaching posts include Eton College (bass guitar & Music Technology), Christ’s Hospital School (visiting teacher of jazz) and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (bass tutor and ensemble coach).
