Biography

Mezzo-soprano Samantha Malk has performed throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas, and her native South Africa. On the opera stage, her roles have included Dido, Dorabella, Cherubino, Carmen, Sesto and Nicklausse and has been a featured soloist with the International Contemporary Ensemble and the Mark Morris Dance Group. In concert, Samantha has partnered with collaborators around the world interpreting song, contemporary music and concert repertoire. She has appeared in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw Brugge, Seiji Ozawa Hall and Snape Maltings. 

Samantha has established a significant reputation as a teacher and mentor, working with singers who have gained contracts with opera companies and music festivals such as Opéra National de Bordeaux, Bayerischer Staatsoper, LA Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opéra National de Paris, Komische Oper Berlin, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Marlboro Music Festival, Tanglewood Music Center, Ravinia Music Festival, SongFest, Verbier Festival, Britten Pears at Aldeburgh Music Festival and on Broadway. Samantha’s students include conservatoire-level students, professional artists and members of major international Young Artist Programmes including the Metropolitan Opera, Staatsoper Hamburg, Opéra de Montreal, Israeli Opera and SongStudio at Carnegie Hall. Her students have been successful in competitions such as the Laffont Competition, Gerda Lissner Competition, Concours International de Chant de Canari, Maria Callas International Gran Prix and The Gold Medal-London. 

Samantha has served on the faculties of the Metropolitan Opera, Israeli Opera, Lakes Area Music Festival, Brooklyn College, International Vocal Arts Institute and Summer Opera Tel Aviv. She holds degrees in vocal performance from Indiana University and the Manhattan School of Music. In 2018 Samantha joined Guildhall School of Music & Drama as Deputy Head of Vocal Studies.
