Event information

You have probably heard how AI is about to take over the world, so come and listen to an alternative – AI as a musical partner.

Composer and music programmer Oded Ben-Tal has been developing an AI-inspired system for live, real-time improvisation with a human partner – concert pianist and improviser David Dolan. The computer ‘listens’ to the pianist and generates responses live and in real-time during the performance.

Together they will perform several duo improvisations, drawing on tonal/modal musical languages on the one hand and the capabilities of cutting-edge technology on the other. They will also explain, in non-technical terms, how this musical dialogue between a human performer and AI works.

Following the concert, the duo will discuss this work and the implications of AI for music-making with additional experts.

This work is supported by the Volkswagen Foundation in partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics.
