About Music Production in Ableton Live
This six-week online evening course provides you with the foundational knowledge needed to produce music from start to finish with the popular Ableton Live software.
The course covers the fundamental concepts around creating MIDI and audio content in this DAW. Other topics such as effect processing, recording, synthesis/sampling, arrangement, automation and the basics of mixing are also covered.
Who is the course for?
- Anyone aged 18 and over interested in learning about Ableton Live including users migrating from other DAW software.
- There is no upper age limit on this course. We encourage and welcome participants ages 18 and over.
What can I expect?
The course is designed to be practical in nature, with exercises and tasks related to each session that can be completed by participants in their own time and pace.
We will foster a classroom atmosphere and encourage active participation, questions and discussion.
The course is designed as a holistic overview of the production process using a fun and creative workflow. You will learn about the following topics:
- MIDI sequencing – percussive and melodic
- Working with audio – recording and editing
- Working with instruments – synths and samplers
- Signal processing – creative and mixing audio effects
- Arrangement techniques, automation and more
By the end of the course you can expect to have gained:
- Comprehension of the music production process
- Understanding of the capabilities of DAWs such as Ableton Live
- Being able to complete a basic musical work using Live
Do I need anything for the course?
- A computer/laptop
- A recent edition of Ableton Live (a 30-day trial can be downloaded for the majority of the course)
- A MIDI controller/keyboard (optional)
- Pen/pad

Eligibility
- For everyone aged 18+. There is no upper age limit on this course. We encourage and welcome participants from ages 18 and over
- A basic understanding of Ableton Live and the concept of digital music production
- Participants must have sufficient English language skills to cope with course demands
Online Short Courses Requirements
All sessions take place online using Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to you in advance of the course start date with further instructions.
To participate in online classes you will need the following:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A laptop/tablet/desktop computer with a microphone and camera (most have these included)
- Speakers/headphones (the speakers in your laptop/tablet/computer should be sufficient)
- A fully updated web browser able to use the most up to date version of Zoom, or a fully updated Zoom client

About the Course Tutor
The course is taught by Nick Feldman.
Nick Feldman has over 25 years of electronic music production and performance experience having performed at Glastonbury, Boomtown, Shambala and across Europe and Japan. He grew out of the DIY free party scene and became more experimental in his work.
Since 2012 he has been teaching music and video courses and is currently finishing a book on creative music production for publication in 2025. He has managed the London Ableton User Group and co-runs Crux – a series of audiovisual live performance events and electronic music/video jam sessions that recently celebrated a decade with a festival at Rich Mix.
Nick has been a professor in the electronic and produced music department of the school since 2017. He is a specialist in Ableton Live and has been teaching the software for music production, sound design and performance since 2012. He has used the software extensively for his own musical projects since the program first appeared on the market. He was previously running the London Ableton User Group.
