Join us for this play day for instrumentalists aged 9-18, playing any brass or percussion instrument, and of ABRSM Grade 3 standard and above. Led by our lively team of inspiring Guildhall tutors and special guests, you will be able to develop your skills in a fun and friendly environment.

Play alongside your friends and meet new ones, enjoy some amazing music and experience different styles through playing in a Brass Band and a New Orleans Street Band.

The day will be led by Guildhall tutors Spencer Down (Brass Co-ordinator & Conductor) and Matt Skelton (Head of Jazz & Drummer), with special guests Peter Horsfall (Trumpet and Vocalist), Matilda Lloyd (Trumpet) & Mark Hampson (Trombone).

Peter Horsfall is an award winning jazz trumpet player and vocalist. He has performed with Kansas Smitty's, De La Soul, DJ Shadow, Guy Barker & Clare Teal. His latest album Nighthawks critically acclaimed by The Guardian as 'ravishing' and by All About Jazz Magazine as "one of the year's most original releases".

Matilda Lloyd is “eloquent trumpet soloist” (The Times), Casta Diva, her debut album was BBC Music Magazine’s Recording of the Month with a five-star review. Matilda will be a European Concert Hall Organisation Rising Star for the 2024/25 season.

Mark Hampson is a founder member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Lucerne Festival Orchestra. He plays with the world’s major orchestras and conductors and is professor at ESMAR conservatory of Valencia and the Music University of Saarbrücken.

Guildhall Young Artists is committed to aiming to ensure that no student faces financial barriers to participation. This is why we have introduced a pay what you can option for those who are not able to pay the recommended ticket price of £30/£20 listed above. 

Venue information

Silk Street Theatre, Music Hall and Lecture Recital Room are located in the main Guildhall School building on Silk Street and for Barbican produced events the venue can also be accessed from the Barbican if you exit via the doors next to Barbican Kitchen on Level G.
