Electronic & Produced Music students chat with Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter
Students from the School's Electronic & Produced Music Department had the chance to attend a special press event to hear Thomas Bangalter's debut orchestral release Mythologies in the Milton Court Concert Hall on Tuesday 4 April.
The special event was set up by the Recording & AV Department from Guildhall School, in association with Warner Classics, Dolby and Apple Music. Bangalter's Mythologies was recorded in Dolby Atmos by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, conducted by Romain Dumas and is due to be released by Warner later this month.
Head of Recording & AV, Julian Hepple said, "I’m incredibly proud of the team here at Guildhall, we relished the opportunity to work with industry partners Dolby, Warner Classics & Apple Music. For Thomas and his team to entrust a project of this magnitude was a real honour. Most importantly of course the long lasting impact to our students of having the opportunity to talk with one of the most prolific artists of our era is not to be underestimated."
The event saw students and journalists head to the concert hall to hear Bangalter in conversation with BBC Radio 3's Elizabeth Alker, discussing the pieces and his writing an recording process. Students were treated to invaluable insights in to his creative process and the inspiration that led to Mythologies, as well as his previous work as one half of French electronic music duo Daft Punk. Following the interview, attendees heard an exclusive orchestral recording in 9.4.6 immersive sound, with the Atmos system arranged around and above them, allowing them to be fully immersed in the music.
Electronic & Produced Music student, Jenny Shen who attended the event said, "It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before. To have someone like a Thomas in the school was incredible. Being in amongst journalists and music industry professionals allowed us to absorb information and music in an entirely new way."
Following the press event, Thomas stayed to chat with the Electronic & Produced Music students, telling them about his own journey as part of the iconic duo Daft Punk. The opportunity to engage with a musician of Bangalter's calibre was a truly inspiring experience for the students, highlighting the School's commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of creativity and innovation in music.
