Guildhall School of Music & Drama announces Autumn Evening Courses for 2024
Autumn Evening Courses for 2024 cover topics including improvisation, writing for screen, film music composition, arts PR, acting practice and orchestration.
This programme of courses for ages 18+ consists of twelve evening courses across drama, music, writing and skills for the creative industries.
Nine of the courses will take place in-person at Guildhall School. Three courses will happen online over Zoom, and will cover subjects including composition, arts evaluation and PR in the arts.
All courses run from 6.30pm onwards during weekday evenings from September through to October or November 2024 (depending on the course), for a duration of four to eight weeks.
Courses are aimed at a range of levels for anyone aged 18 and over, and will offer participants the chance to learn new skills, develop a passion and meet like-minded people.
Autumn Evening Courses include:
- Writing for Screen, Level 2 (in-person), a new course focusing on writing for TV drama, aimed at people who have a first draft of a pilot script that they would like to develop throughout the course, and those who attended Writing for Screen, Level 1.
- A Guide to PR in the Arts (online), an introduction to everything you need to know about PR in the arts, from working with print, online and broadcast media outlets, to navigating social media and content creation.
- Improvisation, Level 1 (in-person), a fun introduction to comedy and drama improvisation perfect for anyone aged 18 and over with a passion for comedy, or wanting to try something new and stimulating.
- Film Music Composition for Beginners (online), for beginner-level composers looking to gain an understanding of how to write music for film.
- Acting Shakespeare (in-person), taught by one of the UK's leading classical actors, designed to give actors the tools they need to approach and perform Shakespeare with confidence.

Acting Shakespeare
Wednesdays, 7–9pm, 25 Sep–30 Oct
Ages 18+
This six-week evening course for beginners will give you the tools you need to approach and perform Shakespeare with confidence. The course will unravel and demystify Shakespeare’s language through practical exercises, identifying key acting clues within the text.

Improvisation, Level 1
Tuesdays, 7–9pm, 24 Sep–29 Oct
Ages 18+
In addition to enhancing wellbeing, improvisation can improve your professional and interpersonal skills. Brighten up your week with fun evenings of comedy and drama, all while developing your creative thinking, teamwork and storytelling.

Introduction to Acting Practice, Level 1
Tuesdays, 7–9pm, 24 Sep–29 Oct
Ages 18+
This course for beginners will explore what "good acting" might be and how actors can achieve it. During the six sessions you will work with the course tutor to develop truthfulness and connection to text.

Introduction to Acting Practice, Level 2
Wednesdays, 7–9pm, 25 Sep–13 Nov
Ages 18+
Further develop your work and grow as an actor, focussing on building confidence through regular scene rehearsals and group sharing. This course will help participants to develop new ways to approach characters and connect to text.

Stanislavsky: A Practical Introduction
Tuesdays, 7–9pm, 24 Sep–12 Nov
Ages 18+
Demystify the theory of Konstantin Stanislavsky with this eight-week evening course aimed at actors of all levels who want to build their confidence in how to approach a new character.

Singing for Beginners
Tuesdays, 7pm–8.45pm, 24 Sep–12 Nov
Ages 18+
Build your confidence and improve your voice with this introductory course. Using songs from a variety of genres, the course will cover breathing, vocal warm-ups and dynamics in singing, and explore colour, texture and expression in song.

Writing for an Orchestra
Wednesdays, 7–9pm, 25 Sep–30 Oct
Ages 18+
Perfect for any composers and musicians with a passion for orchestral music, this course will use musical excerpts to demonstrate the basics of writing for the instruments of an orchestra.

Creative Writing for Live Performance, Level 2
Wednesdays, 7pm–9pm, 25 Sep–13 Nov
Ages 18+
Perfect for writers looking to take their script to the next level, this course will focus on dialogue, structure, redrafting and tone. There will also be the opportunity for participants to watch their work brought to life by actors.

Writing for Screen, Level 2
Tuesdays, 7pm–9pm, 24 Sep–12 Nov
Ages 18+
Get your pilot script screen-ready with this new eight-week evening course. Focussing on writing for TV drama, the course will guide you through the next steps after writing your first script, including TV development, and pitching to agents and production companies.

An Introduction to Arts Evaluation

This four-week online evening course is for those working in the arts and cultural sector, who want to learn how to evaluate and communicate the impact of their work in a way that is effective, creative and accessible.

A Guide to PR in the Arts
Tuesdays, 6.30-8pm BST, 24 Sept–15 Oct
Ages 18+
From working with print, online and broadcast media outlets, to navigating social media and content creation, this course, led by top performing arts media relations agency Rebecca Driver Media Relations (RDMR), is an introduction to everything you need to know about PR in the arts.

Film Music Composition for Beginners

Aimed at anyone with a passion for cinema and film music, this six-week online course will equip you with an understanding of how to compose music for film.
