Guildhall School of Music & Drama announces Summer Evening Courses for 2024
Summer Evening Courses for 2024 cover topics including improvisation, writing for screen, event and production management, film music composition and music production.
Guildhall School's new summer evening programme for ages 18+ consists of eight evening courses across drama, music, production arts and writing for screen.
The programme includes five in-person evening courses, which will take place at Guildhall School, two online music courses and one online course in event and production management, which will take place over Zoom.
All courses will take place from 6.30pm onwards during weekday evenings from April–May/June 2024, for a duration of six and eight weeks.
Courses are aimed at a range of levels – from beginners, right up to industry professionals – and will offer participants the chance to learn new skills, develop a passion and meet like-minded people across all ages and backgrounds.
Summer Evening Courses include:
- Improvisation, Level 2 (in-person), for anyone who already has experience with improvisation or have completed the Improvisation, Level 1 course.
- Introduction to Event and Production Management (online), for anyone interested in events and production management, from school teachers, heads of department (Performing Arts subjects), stage & dance school leaders and amateur dramatic groups, to those wishing to turn their interests and hobbies into a career.
- Music Production in Logic Pro: Intermediate (online), for composers, producers and sound designers with prior experience of digital music production, or those who have completed the Music Production in Logic Pro for Beginners course.
- The Actor's Playground (in-person), for actors and anyone interested in expanding their creativity, learning about the art of clowning and working with joy, play and humour.
- Writing for Screen, Level 1 (in-person), for writers at a beginner’s level, who wish to gain tools to write or develop a screenplay for TV or film or continue working on their existing ideas.
The booking deadline for Summer Evening Courses is 5pm, Friday 19 April 2024, or when the course reaches capacity.

Drama
Improvisation, Level 2
Tuesday evenings, 23 April – 11 June 2024, 7pm–9pm
Ages 18+
Take comedy and drama improvisation to another level in this eight-week evening course. Whether you aspire to be on a comedy panel show, want to develop your acting skills, or simply enjoy a pressure-free creative outlet, this course will help you think on your feet, realise your potential, and work on more sophisticated scenes and exercises.

Introduction to Acting Practice, Level 1
Tuesday evenings, 23 April – 28 May 2024, 7pm–9pm
Ages 18+
This six-week evening course for beginners, will explore what "good acting" might be and how actors can achieve it. During the six sessions, you will work with the course tutor to develop truthfulness and connection to text.

Introduction to Acting Practice, Level 2
Wednesday evenings, 24 April – 12 June 2024, 7pm–9pm
Ages 18+
This eight-week evening course will help you to further develop your work and grow as an actor. You will focus on building your confidence through regular scene rehearsals and group sharing and will develop new ways to approach characters and connect to text, all within a small and supportive ensemble.

The Actor's Playground
Tuesday evenings, 23 April – 11 June 2024, 7pm–9pm
Ages 18+
This new eight-week course will help you feel free, confident and empowered on stage by combining practical acting techniques with joyful clowning practice. Whether you are creating characters, or performing your own work, or are simply curious, you will rediscover the importance of playfulness and will engage in the techniques of actors and theatre practitioners including Michael Chekhov, Augusto Boal, Viola Spolin and Phillipe Gaulier.

Writing for Screen, Level 1
Tuesday evenings, 23 April – 11 June 2024, 7pm–9pm
Ages 18+
This eight-week evening course will develop your creative writing skills and provide you with inspiration to translate an idea into a screenplay. The course, which will be taught by writer and actor Emma Dennis-Edwards, will focus on the techniques required for screenwriting for Film and TV.

Music
Writing for an Orchestra
Wednesday evenings, 24 April – 29 May 2024, 7pm–9pm
Ages 18+
This six-week evening course will introduce you to the fundamentals of orchestration and the pivotal role it can play in the communication of musical ideas. You will learn how to write idiomatically for the instruments of the orchestra, as well as how to balance and blend them with one another.

Film Music Composition: Intermediate
Tuesday evenings, 23 April – 28 May 2024, 6.30pm–8.30pm, BST (UTC+1)
Ages 18+
This six-week online course will develop your skills in writing music for a wide range of film genres, including commercials, horror, animation and fashion.

Music Production in Logic Pro: Intermediate
Wednesday evenings, 24 April – 29 May 2024, 6.30pm–8.30pm, BST (UTC+1)
Ages 18+
This six-week online evening course will cover a wide range of topics designed to expand your knowledge and understanding of music technology, whilst improving the quality of your productions. Topics include techniques in sound synthesis and advanced audio processing, as well as mixing music and mastering audio.

Skills for the Creative Industries
Introduction to Event & Production Management
Wednesday evenings, 24 April – 29 May 2024, 6.30pm–8.30pm, BST (UTC+1)
Ages 18+
This six-week online evening course is the perfect introduction to the skills required to production manage a variety of shows and events, whilst understanding the significant challenges that come with such a varied role.
