What was your first experience within the performing arts? How did you know this was something that you wanted to pursue professionally?
Emma: I played a skunk in a performance at nursery, the character wasn’t my first choice… but being silly on stage was so much fun and I think that’s where my love for performance started!
In addition to your new role as Head of GYA King’s Cross, you are Director of Applied Theatre & Community at the BRIT School. What do you enjoy most about teaching children and young people within the arts sector?
Emma: For me its all about the arts being a tool for more than just performance. It’s seeing the confidence and freedom it offers to children and young people, allowing them to express themselves in ways that they may not otherwise be able to. That’s what I love.
What are you most looking forward to in your new role at GYA King’s Cross?
Emma: Building a community of artists and welcoming anyone who has a passion for creativity.
What can someone expect from GYA King’s Cross?
Emma: High quality training in a safe, supportive environment where children and young people can explore their creativity.
What would your advice be to someone thinking about joining GYA King’s Cross, but are feeling a little bit scared or nervous?
Emma: We are here to support you every step of the way and are excited to see what you can bring to the creative table.
Emma will lead new drama, music and production arts centre Guildhall Young Artists (GYA) King's Cross, along with Creative Director and Head of Music Spencer Down. The centre opens on Saturday 24 September, but students can join at anytime.
With no auditions or experience required, and bursaries available, Guildhall Young Artists King’s Cross is a great way to access Guildhall School’s world-class performing and production arts training.
