In Conversation with Mayna, Music Student at Guildhall Young Artists King's Cross

It's been one year since Guildhall Young Artists (GYA) King's Cross opened — our music, drama and production arts centre for ages 5–18.

We caught up with Mayna, who has been on the Music Course since the beginning, to find out what the past year has been like and her wish for the next year.

You’ve been part of the Music Course at GYA King’s Cross since it opened last year. How has it been for you? Have there been any highlights?

It's been incredible, really fun and has helped me improve my music abilities. I'm so lucky to be attending. I love the easy bond that everyone has at the school, you can easily make friends, since we're all practically there for the same reason. I really enjoyed the end of term where we performed at Guildhall School; that performance was really amazing.

What made you want to attend GYA King’s Cross?

I really wanted to improve my music skills and make new friends, and it has helped with both of those.

Classes start from 9am on Saturdays during term time. How is that for you? Do you have far to travel?

It's a bit early but it's fine. It's like a 20-25 minute bus ride from my house so I don't mind it.

What’s the best thing about being at GYA King’s Cross?

I love the opportunities that coming to GYA has given me, and the people I've met here are one of the best things about GYA.

Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to attend, but might be feeling a little bit nervous?

To be honest, most people look scary but they are some of the sweetest people I've ever met. My advice is to get out of your comfort zone and explore new experiences because you never know whether you will be getting this opportunity again.

It was King’s Cross first birthday on 24 September, so in the spirit of birthdays and making a wish, you have one wish for the next year. What would this be? This can be anything.

I really want to pass my drama GCSE.

Thank you Mayna, it's been great to hear all about your experience. Find out more about the Music Course at GYA King's Cross at gsmd.ac.uk/kings-cross/music. New students welcome at anytime and free taster sessions available.
