Biography
Michelle made her TV debut as Betty in Fingersmith in 2005. In 2006, she starred in Terry Pratchett's novel Hogfather, Channel 4's The Red Riding Trilogy in 2008 and in BBC's Waking the Dead in 2009.
Michelle came to prominence in 2010 when she played Lady Mary Crawley in Julian Fellowes' series Downton Abbey. Michelle received three consecutive Emmy Award nominations in the category for 'Outstanding Lead Actress In Drama Series' for her role as Lady Mary Crawley, as well as a Golden Globe nomination in 2013.
Michelle also starred in the film Hanna in 2011, and Anna Karenina In 2012. In 2014, she appeared in the action thriller feature film Non-Stop.
In 2016, Michelle starred in the lead role of Letty Raines in Good Behavior, an American drama series based on the novella series by Blake Crouch. In 2017, Michelle starred in The Sense of an Ending, and later that year, Michelle played a lead role in the Netflix western miniseries Godless.
Michelle reprised her lead role as Lady Mary Crawley in the Downton Abbey film in 2019, as well as starring in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen.
In 2014, Michelle was made a Fellow of Guildhall School in recognition of her achievements in television, and was listed in The Sunday Times Britain's 500 Most Influential People.
