Biography
Christopher Murray was awarded a scholarship to study with Hannah Roberts and Gregor Horsch at the RNCM where he won the Barbirolli Prize (the RNCM’s highest award for cellists) and performed as a concerto soloist. He was also awarded by the Musician’s Benevolent Fund, Martin Musical Trust and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.
Other concerto appearances include the Norfolk Symphony, Tyneside Chamber and New Tyneside orchestras. Christopher worked with composer Hans Abrahamsen for a performance of his music for solo cello that was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Other highlights include performing alongside Piers Lane and Brett Dean as part of the composer’s Wigmore Hall Celebration.
Since 2005 he has been cellist of the Heath String Quartet, with which he has performed throughout the world. Recipients of many accolades, including the 2012 Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artists Award, the Heath Quartet appears regularly in major venues and festivals throughout Europe and is often broadcast on radio. Recent highlights include complete Beethoven cycles in Salamanca and Edinburgh, debuts at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and DeSingel Arts Centre in Antwerp, recitals with Michael Collins in Germany and Austria, and appearances at the Salisbury, Peasmarsh, Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, Schwetzinger and Kissingen Winterzauber festivals.
