Event information
There are two principal applications of improvisation to Classical performance. One involves the elaboration of a composition, in which the performer decorates and otherwise alters the surface and content of the work while keeping its structure unchanged through spontaneous invention, whose goal is to deepen the drama and expression of the work. Contemporary treatises are explicit in stating that the purpose of such treatment is to enhance expression and not to demonstrate mere technical agility. The other involves free creativity: cadenzas in concertos and music created on the spot. The primary genres of the latter are free fantasies and variations on a given tune.
Robert’s presentation will address the techniques required for these genres and include demonstrations of resultant improvisations.
The evening will culminate in a large improvised fantasy with allowance for audience questions.
The fantasy will be based on themes provided by the audience during the short break between the lecture-demonstrations and the improvised fantasy.
This event is hosted by the Centre for Creative Performance & Classical Improvisation.
