Beyond the Blue are an exciting, up-and-coming London-based Jazz band. They have played a number of sell-out shows in London and Brighton, as well as participating in and scoring short films by local filmmakers. They have opened for a number of established bands such as Blue Lab Beats and Ebi Soda and have played alongside artists/groups from a variety of genres such as Illajoy, Bukky Sky, Kymara and Genepool. Since two of the members joined the Guildhall School of Music and Drama undergraduate jazz course, the original quartet line up has expanded with the recent additions of alto sax/soprano, tenor sax and cello to form a dynamic septet sound. Their latest quartet release, a four track EP entitled 'Four Rooms', marks an evolution in the band's musical aesthetic. It draws influence from a wide range of genres and bands such as jungle/drum and bass, as well as Radiohead and Massive Attack inspired styles. These new influences are balanced with Beyond the Blue’s signature atmospheric and moody jazz sound so that the EP still remains distinctly unique.

Acknowledged as one of the UK’s most versatile and creative cellists, trailblazing cellist and composer Shirley Smart brings her new sextet project to this year's EFG London Jazz Festival. Drawing on a background of 10 years living in Jerusalem and working with the overlapping worlds of jazz, Arabic, Turkish and North African music, Shirley is equally at home and well versed in all these traditions, and her music draws upon this rich tapestry of influences to create an evening of vibrant melodies, grooves, swing and lively improvisation.
Showcasing her unique ability to explore the potential of the cello in a jazz context, performing multiple roles as bassist, lead and soloist on the instrument, and featuring also some of the UK’s leading lights in world-influenced jazz – John Crawford (Ola Onabule) on piano, James Arben (Mulatu Astatke, Hackney Colliery Band, Heliocentrics) on sax/flute, Tim Quicke (Lousie Balkwill, Giles Thornton) on trumpet and Michele Montoli (Alina Bzhezhinska) on bass and Demi Garcia Sabat (John Dankworth, Nicolas Meier) on drums this dynamic group promises an evening of inspired music-making.
