A performance by the Guildhall Improvisers’ Workshop led by saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes in collaboration with trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas, as the culmination of his week-long residency with the Guildhall Jazz department.
Guildhall Improvisers’ Workshop is a newly formed group focusing on creative jazz improvisation, approaching the jazz ensemble as a malleable vehicle for contemporary composition. This performance will feature new work by Guildhall students and material generated from composition workshops with Dave Douglas.
The concert will also feature a set from Dave Douglas and Trish Clowes’s band MY IRIS, playing a mixture of Douglas and Clowes’s compositions.

Dave Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer, and educator from New York City known for the stylistic breadth of his work, the lyricism and wide-ranging curiosity of his music, and for keeping a diverse set of ensembles and projects active simultaneously. His unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition, including a Doris Duke Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award, and two Grammy Award nominations. Douglas’ career spans more than 60 unique original recordings as a leader and more than 500 published works.
In 2005 Douglas founded Greenleaf Music, an umbrella company for his recordings, sheet music, podcast, as well as the music of other artists in the modern jazz idiom, producing over 80 releases. In 2022 Clowes released her fourth album with MY IRIS, ‘A View with a Room’, on Greenleaf Music.

Milton Court, based across the road from our Silk Street building, provides the School with world-class performance and training spaces, including a state of the art concert hall, a lyric theatre, a studio theatre and several major rehearsal rooms.
