Specialist Area: Lighting Design & Technical Theatre Practitioner

What’s been your highlight during your time at Guildhall?

As someone who’s predominantly trained in Lighting Design, I was always in my own world, it feels great to just be in a room with the cohort knowing that we are going to produce new and quality products, whilst also making learning how to make the process enjoyable for everyone.

What’s been your highlight in the industry?

Being able to watch high level of quality productions and getting in touch with established and esteemed designers played a pivotal part in my development as a practitioner or a designer. It has been such an enriching and welcoming experience to just be here, expand my horizons and building better networking with the others. Having then shared what was imparted to me to the upcoming and rising practitioners is profoundly gratifying.

What other passions and projects have you enjoyed exploring during your time at Guildhall?

I had the honour to wear the hat of a Lighting Designer for an original experimental dance production; Bebek, which electronic music was heavily involved in the show. Produced and Choreographed by Shea Sullivan with the support from the Composer, Efe Yuksel. I am also part of the research and development for a production called Are we about to kiss?, written by Tabby Morgan. Apart from passion projects, I will be back in Singapore in April designing the lights for Once on this Island and a 10th year anniversary music concert in July.

What's something you've learned that you feel will help you when you graduate?

The exploration of how I work, interact and communicate with people of different social poise, various age range, and types of targeted audience will definitely help me improve my workflow of how I approach certain things and people. I have also tried to adapt certain elements of user interface and workflows from other designers which I can try to develop and see if it would improve mine.

What are you most interested in working in after you graduate?

I have primarily been working as a Lighting Designer, I don’t think I would steer far away from it and I hope to continue practising it. Throughout this programme, Dr Emily Orley and Dr Susannah Henry has taught me so much about openness, and as a Technical Theatre Practitioner myself, I am open to take part in multi-faceted and inter-disciplinary work. Pretty much in my Lighting Design realm, but in exploration of other disciplines, but most importantly, wanting to work and have fun.
